Le coureur américain Chris Horner (RadioShack), 41 ans tout de même , s’impose dans la côte finale de la 3e étape du Tour d’Espagne au terme de 184 km entre Vigo et le Mirador de Lobeira et s’empare du maillot rouge de leader en même temps.
Une étape très nerveuse marquée par plusieurs chutes dans les derniers kilomètres, l’Américain a attaqué dans la montée du Mirador de Lobeira pour devance d’une poignée de secondes Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) et Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha).
Une échappée composée de 5 coureurs avaient tout d’abord vu le jour, on y trouvait le Français Cyril Bessy (Cofidis), l’Italien Luca Dodi (Lampre) et les Espagnols Vicente Reynes (Lotto), Pablo Urtasun (Euskaltel) et Fabriccio Ferrari (Caja Rural) mais elle sera reprise assez facilement.A 4km de l’arrivée, une chute importante a fait exploser le peloton en plusieurs groupes créant une confusion au sein des formations. Certains leaders comme le Français Thibaut Pinot se retrouve relégué au fin fond du peloton.
Il faudra tout de même attendre les derniers 15 km pour voir tout le monde se rassembler et former un peloton plus ou moins compact.
Dès le début de la dernière difficulté , Ivan Santaromita attaque et est immédiatement suivi par Chris Horner. L’Américain dépose Santaromita ef file vers la victoire finale, et s’octroie les 10 sec de bonifications du vainqueur d’étape et s’offre donc du même coup le maillot de leader au classement général devant Nibali et Nicolas Roche. Le coureur Irlandais de la Saxo conserve le maillot à points et celui de meilleur grimpeur obtenu lors de sa victoire hier.
